Balmain Public School
At Balmain Public School we provide students with the highest quality teaching and learning experiences. All classes offer differentiated classroom programs to cater for individual abilities and needs. We encourage self-expression and help students become adaptable and independent learners. Our students develop long lasting positive relationships. These relationships are a result of highly motivated, happy students and outstanding learning outcomes which look at the whole child.
School operates from 8:50 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Supervision is provided in the playground from 8:30 a.m. Families that require supervision before and after school should contact the Eaton Street Centre.
We encourage and value parental involvement across the school. Parents may assist with fundraising, classrooms activities, excursions, special days, canteen and organisational committees within the school. The Balmain Public Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association holds monthly meetings which take place on the 1st Wednesday of every month.
Balmain Public School requires parents/caregivers to fill in an application to enrol at a NSW public school form which is available either at the school or downloadable from the NSW Public School’s website. Additional information such as translations and other enrolment information may also be accessed on the NSW Public School’s Website.
Gifted and Talented Education
All our teachers have received training in catering for gifted and talented students. At Balmain Public School we put the Department of Education and Communities Gifted and Talented Policy into practice by understanding that gifted students have potential, but it requires systematic instruction to turn the gifts into talent. Instruction is structured according to the needs of our gifted students using differentiation and grouping strategies. Subject acceleration and full acceleration are provisions that are embedded into our policy for students achieving consistently beyond their age cohort. Our extra-curricular opportunities such as debating, mathematical challenges and more, provide for specific gifts and talent.
Balmain Public School has Opportunity Classes in years 5 and 6 which provide a differentiated classroom program. These specialist education programs cater for the needs of high ability students, encouraging them to realise their highest potential. The OC students integrate into school happenings and are an integral part of the school. Children in year 4 may sit an assessment for selection into Opportunity classes.
At Balmain Public School your child is part of a caring and nurturing community supported by Year 6 buddies who assist Kindies in their transition to school life. During this first year of school, children develop literacy and numeracy skills, social skills, environmental awareness and creative and physical independence. Indigenous perspectives are included in all learning, and home languages are encouraged.
A set of transition sessions helps to prepare your child for school by making children familiar with the school, some of the people and the kind of activities they can expect. Please contact the school office for dates and more information.
The NSW Department of Education “Going to Primary School” webpage has useful links to information which assists in preparing for school.
Voluntary P & C Contributions
Voluntary P & C school contribution funds allow for the purchasing of resources and development of programs to further enhance teaching and learning within the school. They help provide additional educational resources for the benefit of students and provide parents/caregivers with the opportunity to make a difference.
Balmain Public School has a school band and string ensemble which meets once a week for tuition. The school also has a choir in which everyone is welcome to join. Kindergarten to year 4 students participate in a recorder program which allows for the development of musical concepts. Tutors are highly qualified and the students have a wonderful time. For costs and further information please contact the school.
Balmain Public School P & C organise a canteen lunch every Friday. Lunch orders are sent home every Monday. Students are required to place all lunch orders in the ‘Lunch orders box’ outside the school office.
